MATERIALS OF BLACKNESS: FELT & DENIM (2025)
Crafted from felt and denim, this flag reimagines the 1976 U.S. Bicentennial star —once used to celebrate 200 years of American independence—through the colors of Pan-African liberation. Christine Miller’s reinterpretation transforms the original patriotic emblem into a visual language of Black power, history, and celebration.
Black Summer: Juneteenth, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”, and Black August This textile work honors Juneteenth through its material, which is repurposed, humble, and charged with memory. The soft touch of felt contrasts with the rugged resilience of denim, reminding us that Black freedom has always been a handmade process.
Material: Upcycled Denim, Acrylic Felt
Size: 18.5” x 18.5”
