WATERMELON : BLACK SUMMER STUDIES (#5)
Painted by Christine Miller - the Watermillion: Liberation Studies series reclaims national iconography through Black vernacular, abstraction, and poetic materiality.
Each painting features a five-point inverted watermelon star rendered accompanied by Pan-African colors—framed by a rose, a liberation diagram, and three handwritten words: “watermillion,” “watermelon,” and “watuhmilyn.” These tonal variations of the same word speak to regional dialect, oral tradition, and cultural memory. Each version is a declaration, a song, a refusal to flatten language or experience.
Rooted in the radical softness of Black liberation, this series references sweetness and survival, tenderness and truth. With roses as offerings and color fields as studies, these works operate as personal declarations and cultural portals.
Each original work is unique and part of a limited six-piece collection.
Material: Watercolor on 100% Cotton Watercolor Paper, Gel Mediums
Dimension: 16”x20”
